- Size: H36cm W115cm D3cm
- Length of the fossil: 107 cm
- Description: A juvenile ichthyosaur from the Posidonia Slate Formation of the Lower Jurassic (Lias Epsilon, approx. 180 million years ago), embedded in the original matrix with a unique preservation of skin and muscles. 3D preparation of the head area including the two rows of teeth in the lower and upper jaw. The preparation of this specimen corresponds to the highest museum standards, which underlines the extremely good tissue and surface preservation. Highly scientifically relevant specimen.
- Additional information: Ichthyosaurs, members of an extinct group of aquatic reptiles, most of which were very similar in appearance and habits to porpoises. These distant relatives of lizards and snakes (lepidosaurs) were the most highly specialized aquatic reptiles, but ichthyosaurs were not dinosaurs. Ichthyosaurs had a very wide geographic distribution, and their fossil remains span almost the entire Mesozoic Era (251 million to 65.5 million years ago); however, they were most common and diverse during the Triassic and Jurassic (251 million to 145.5 million years ago). Excellent fossil specimens occur in the fine-grained shales of the Early Jurassic in southern Germany.
- Other: Certificate available from the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (Germany).
