The Solnhofen Limestone consists of thin layers of fine-grained limestones interbedded with thinner layers of shales; originally they were deposited in small, stagnant marine basins (possibly with very high salinity and low oxygen levels) that were surrounded by reefs. The limestone has been quarried for hundreds of years, used in building construction and for lithographic printing. The Solnhofen Limestone is also known as Solnhofen Plattenkalk.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0760/6131/1302/files/aspidorhynchus-acutirostris-fish-for-sale.png?v=1777992174
