- Additional Information: Sandstone is a lithified aggregation of sand-sized particles (0.063 to 2mm in diameter). It is the second most abundant sedimentary rock after shale, comprising approximately 10 to 20 percent of the Earth's crustal sedimentary rocks. Due to their abundance, diverse textures, and mineralogy, sandstones are important indicators of erosional and depositional processes. Texturally, sandstones consist of two components: (1) a framework of sand-sized particles, and (2) voids between the grains that may either be empty, especially for modern sandstones, or—as is the case for most ancient sandstones—filled with a chemical cement of silica or calcium carbonate, or a fine-grained matrix.
