- Additional information: Although many fossil fish have been found, knowledge about fish evolution is still relatively patchy. By and large, older groups were gradually replaced by newer, better-adapted groups. One or a few members of a group developed a fundamentally more efficient way of eating, breathing, or swimming, or several better ways of living. These better-adapted groups then forced the extinction of members of the older group with whom they competed for available food, breeding sites, or other necessities of life.
