- Additional information: Crinoids, also known as sea lilies or feather stars, are examples of living fossils. Crinoids belong to the phylum Echinodermata and are distantly related to starfish, brittle stars and sea urchins. They are filter feeders with feathery crowns that capture microscopic particles to feed on and bob back and forth on the sea floor. Their fossil remains are found all over the world, but the most beautiful and best preserved specimens come from the Posidonia shale layers of Holzmaden in southern Germany.
