- Origin: Arizona, USA
- Age: Probably Triassic, 220 million years
- Size: H94cm W116cm D2cm
- Weight: 39kg
- Description: This Araucarioxylon arizonicum fossil is cut open and polished to reveal the attractive color spectrum. It has a fine composition and unevenness of ochre, white, gunmetal and brown. The sides and bottom are left in their natural state. Given the uniqueness of this specimen, further details could be obtained through scientific examination using higher magnification micrography techniques.
- Additional information: Petrified wood, fossil formed by the penetration of minerals into cavities between and within cells of natural wood, usually by silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) or calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO3). The petrified forests of the western United States are silicified wood in which the tree tissue has been replaced by chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz). Often this replacement is so accurate that both the internal structure and external form are faithfully reproduced.
