  • Additional information: The ammonites (Ammonoidea) were a diverse extinct group of cephalopods. With over 1500 known genera, they were extremely rich in form, and their number of species is estimated at about 30,000 to 40,000. The shells of adult animals were usually 1 to 30 cm in size, but there were exceptions such as the "Upper Palatinate giant ammonite", which only had a diameter of 35 cm, and Parapuzosia seppenradensis, which is considered the largest known species with a shell diameter of about 1.80 m. Ammonites have been an important indicator in geology and paleontology since their first appearance in the Lower Devonian until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous about 350 million years ago. They are partly used to delimit the time of marine sediments and are therefore of great scientific importance.
