  • Additional Information: The Solnhofen Limestone is a famous Jurassic Konservat-Lagerstätte (a sedimentary deposit that exhibits extraordinary fossil richness and preservation) that is located near the town of Solnhofen in southern Germany that preserves exceptionally detailed fossils from the Tithonian age of the Jurassic period (150.8 to 145.5 million years ago). The Solnhofen Limestone consists of thin layers of fine-grained limestones interbedded with thinner layers of shales; originally they were deposited in small, stagnant marine basins (possibly with very high salinity and low oxygen levels) that were surrounded by reefs. The limestone has been quarried for hundreds of years, used in building construction and for lithographic printing. The Solnhofen Limestone is also known as Solnhofen Plattenkalk.
