- Description: Stone Meteorite Chondrite
- Additional information: Chondrite, generally a stony meteorite characterized by the presence of chondrules.
- Chondrule, small, round particles embedded in most stony meteorites called chondrites. Chondrules are typically about a millimeter in diameter and are composed primarily of the silicate minerals olivine and pyroxene. The textural and chemical relationships indicate that they formed at high temperatures as dispersed, molten droplets that subsequently solidified and condensed into chondritic masses. This process occurred in early space, before the planets accreted. However, how the chondrules were melted is not yet clear. It seems likely that pre-existing dust particles or planetesimals were melted by high-energy events such as high-speed collisions and thrown around as droplets that quickly cooled and crystallized.
