- Description: Fossil turtle. Testudo sp. The fossil turtle Testudo sp. represents an ancient member of the order Testudines, which includes modern turtles and tortoises. This species is characterized by its robust, dome-shaped shell, known as the carapace, which provides protection and support for the animal's internal organs. The shell is typically made up of numerous bony plates called scutes arranged in a specific pattern. The plastron, the ventral part of the shell, is also well developed and provides additional protection. Fossil specimens of Testudo sp. often show features such as powerful limbs adapted for terrestrial locomotion and a beak-like structure for feeding. Preservation is excellent.
- Additional information: Fossils of Testudo sp. are of great importance for understanding the evolution and diversity of the Chelonia (turtles and tortoises) through geological time. These fossils have been discovered in various locations worldwide, including Europe, Asia and Africa, and cover different geological periods, from the Jurassic to the Pleistocene. The study of Testudo sp. fossils provides valuable insights into the paleoecology, biogeography and adaptations of these ancient reptiles and contributes to the knowledge of the evolutionary history of the Testudines.
