- Description: This fossilized skull fossil of Coelodonta antiquitatis , a woolly rhinoceros species, is exceptionally well preserved and represents one of the most fascinating remnants of the Pleistocene fauna of the Northern Hemisphere. The species appeared about 350,000 years ago and became extinct towards the end of the Ice Age. This imposing animal was probably hunted by early humans, which may have contributed to its extinction. These animals rose to fame when depictions of them, dating back about 30,000 years, were found on cave walls in the south of France. The woolly rhinoceros was about 3.80 meters long and 2 meters high. It lived in the same habitat as the mammoth and outnumbered all rhinoceros species living and extinct today. Such discoveries are particularly rare in German geological deposits, making this fossil an exceptional centerpiece of any paleontological collection.
- Additional information: Fossils of Coelodonta antiquitatis are of great importance for understanding the ecology and evolution of large herbivorous mammals in the Pleistocene. These fossils have been discovered at various sites in Europe and Asia, often in association with other Ice Age megafauna. The study of Coelodonta antiquitatis provides valuable insights into the adaptations of these animals to cold, harsh environments, including their thick, woolly fur and specialized feeding habits. These fossils contribute to our knowledge of the paleoecology and extinction dynamics of the Pleistocene epoch.
