- Description: Trilobites are among the oldest creatures to have inhabited the planet, and perhaps the best known fossils after the dinosaurs. They form a class of marine arachnomorph arthropods that populated the seas in large numbers during the Paleozoic Era, from the Cambrian to the Permian periods. They inhabited the oceans for over 300 million years, and the last of them disappeared during the mass extinction event about 250 million years ago - making them one of the most successful species that ever lived. Paradoxides is a genus of large to very large trilobites found worldwide. Its cephalon was semicircular with free cheeks ending in long, narrow, recurved spines. The eyes were crescent-shaped, allowing all-round vision. Its elongated thorax consisted of 19-21 segments and was adorned with long, recurved lateral spines.
- Additional information: Certain specimens of Paradoxides sp. can reach record-breaking sizes. This is probably also the case with the present mass extinction plate of almost 21 enormous trilobites, measuring up to 20 to 25 cm and originally embedded in the rock. From the Cambrian period, ca. 550 million years ago. Mass extinction plate with this large type of trilobite. A plate of this size and quality is exceptionally rare.
