- Origin: Holzmaden, Germany
- Size: H65cm W160cm D4cm
- Length of the fossil: 140cm
- Description: Exceptional specimen in original slate matrix. The head bones have excellent surface structure, an intact scleral ring and complete rows of teeth. Fossilized organic parts, possibly stomach contents, preserved under the rib cover. A remarkable find that sheds light on the anatomy and possible feeding habits of the ichthyosaur.
- Additional information: Ichthyosaurs, members of an extinct group of aquatic reptiles, most of which were very similar in appearance and lifestyle to porpoises. These distant relatives of lizards and snakes (lepidosaurs) were the most specialized aquatic reptiles, but ichthyosaurs were not dinosaurs. Ichthyosaurs were very widespread geographically, and their fossil remains span almost the entire Mesozoic era (251 million to 65.5 million years ago); However, they were most common and diverse during the Triassic and Jurassic periods (251 million to 145.5 million years ago). Excellent fossil specimens occur in the fine-grained schist rocks of the Early Jurassic in southern Germany.
- Other: Release certificate available from the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart, Germany.
