  • Origin: Holzmaden, Germany
  • Size: H122cm W293cm D4cm
  • Description: This exceptional specimen of a 180-million-year-old ichthyosaur comes from the famous Lias Epsilon layers of the Urweltsteinbruch (primitive quarry) in Holzmaden, Germany. The fossil is remarkably well preserved and has been prepared with exceptional precision, resulting in a nearly complete reconstruction. Of particular note is that the head of this ichthyosaur comes from another, equally excellently preserved specimen, which has been seamlessly integrated into the overall structure thanks to the excellent preparation. The head position and the front flipper paddle have been precisely aligned, allowing the fossil to be experienced in its original form and anatomy. The well-preserved teeth and the visible stomach contents, preserved beneath the ribs, provide valuable insights into the lifestyle and diet of this marine reptile.
  • Additional information: Ichthyosaurs, an extinct group of marine reptiles, were perfectly adapted to their aquatic lifestyle and resembled modern whales in appearance and behavior. These animals lived primarily during the Mesozoic Era and were expert swimmers. Their fossils, especially those from the shale rocks of southern Germany, are of great scientific importance due to their exceptional preservation and detail.
