- Origin: Drügendorf, Franconia, Bavaria, Germany
- Age: From the Upper Jurassic period, 163.5 million years old
- Size: H83cm W62cm D25cm
- Description: Orthosphinctes sp. | Malm gamma 1
- This fascinating specimen dates from the 1980s and comes from a no longer active quarry. It has the appearance of a mosaic and is completely original and not reconstructed. With its dense, natural arrangement of ammonites, this impressive mass extinction plate contains ammonites of various sizes, with the largest measuring 21 cm in diameter. Unusually, it also features numerous belemnites, with the longest belemnite measuring 9 cm in length. The fossil belemnites were replaced with aragonite, replacing the limestone of the remaining fossil, and were then prepared and polished to reveal their warm brown colors. The specimen measures 50 x 57 x 10 cm and is offered with a custom-made stand.
- Additional information: Ammonites were predatory molluscs that resembled a squid with a snail shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral-shaped shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, although the shells resemble that of a nautilus. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago. The last lines disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period.
