  • Age: Pleistocene, approximately 180,000 years old.
  • Additional Description: The giant clams are the members of the clam genus Tridacna, which are the largest living clams. There are actually several species of "giant clams" in the genus Tridacna, which are often confused with Tridacna gigas, the species most commonly referred to as a giant clam.
  • Antonio Pigafetta documented it in his diary as early as 1521. One of several large species of mussels native to the shallow coral reefs of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, they can weigh more than 200 kilograms, reach up to 120 cm in diameter, and have an average life expectancy of over 100 years in the wild. They are also found off the coast of the Philippines and in the South China Sea in the coral reefs of Sabah (Malaysian Borneo).
