- Additional information: Mammoth, (genus Mammuthus), any member of an extinct group of elephants found as fossils in Pleistocene deposits on every continent except Australia and South America, and in early Holocene deposits in North America. (The Pleistocene began 2.6 million years ago and ended 11,700 years ago; the Holocene began 11,700 years ago and continues to the present.) The woolly mammoth, northern, or Siberian mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is by far the best known of all the mammoths. The excellent state of preservation of carcasses of this species, found in the permanently frozen soils of Siberia, has yielded much information about the structure and habits of mammoths.
